West Yorkshire, NEW BEEHIVE, Bradford. We bring the news that the New Beehive has been listed by Historic England, as part of the ongoing national collaboration between Historic England and CAMRA. Unfortunately, this may have come too late to save the day for the pub itself, the building having been recently sold to apparently unsympathetic new owners. It is reported that all the front windows have been replaced with uPVC and the serving counter removed. However, local planning enforcement have been alerted and an urgent press release issued by the local branch pub officer, Peter Down, keeping alive the hope that the complete loss of Bradford’s last remaining pub interior of outstanding national importance might still be averted. Thanks to Dave Gamston for this. |
Worcestershire, PAUL PRY, Worcester. Good news that the Pope family, who have been leasing the Paul Pry since 2017, have now bought the freehold from DKG Inns. This hopefully now secures the long-term future of the pub, which has suffered periods of closure and changes of management in the last twenty years, for a time operating as a restaurant. Thanks to Mark Haslam for this update. See: Worcester News. |
Somerset, ROSE & CROWN, Huish Episcopi. The Rose & Crown, known as ‘Eli’s’ after previous landlord Eli Scott, has now re-opened. The pub, one of only six surviving traditional pubs without a bar counter, has been owned by the same family since 1871. The new licensees are now the 5th generation of the family to run the pub, which is quite remarkable. Thanks to new landlady Lauren O’Malley for getting in touch and letting us know. |
Argyll & the Isles, COMMERCIAL, Lochgilphead. Following a recent visit Mick Slaughter reports that the Commercial is shut. The previous landlord died in February. Mick was informed that it has been sold to a local hotelier, who reportedly has no intentions of re-opening, although the interior currently remains intact. |
Greater Manchester, RAILWAY INN, Altrincham. Mick Slaughter reports on a recent visit to the Railway, which re-opened in August 2021 as an Irish themed pub. Mick reports positive changes from the refurbishment: restoration of the parquet floor in the Bar Parlour (previously was carpeted), removal of modern woodwork in the Vault, and the damaged bench end in the Tap Room has been repaired. However, we have also heard that an abundance of televisions and some of the theming memorabilia have somewhat detracted from the experience. |
