Pub-Heritage-Bulletin-223-Aug-2021

Some good news on five re-openings of National Inventory pubs to report:

Leicestershire, THREE HORSESHOES, Whitwick. The Three Horseshoes has found a new tenant and has now re-opened. The pub has been shut for a year while a new tenant was being sought by Admiral Taverns. This unspoilt local, which was created from 4 cottages in 1882, is known as ‘Pollys’ after landlady Polly Burton. The Burton family ran the pub for over a century until 2017.

Devon, DREWE ARMS, Drewsteignton. Following a two year closure a new tenant has also been found by Stonegate for the Drewe Arms. The pub re-opened early August. This famous thatched village pub, was run by Mabel Mudge until her retirement aged 99 in 1994. The pub then developed into a thriving business while preserving its historic core and is recognised by the Pub Heritage group as a superlative example of sensitive refurbishment.

Greater Manchester, RAILWAY, Broadheath. The Railway re-opened in August with a new tenant following a long closure. The local branch, Trafford and Hulme, report that it has re-opened as an Irish themed pub. And that the refurbishment has been sympathetic with original features preserved. They also report that the new landlord is planning to serve real ales in the future.

Cumbria, PHEASANT INN, Bassenthwaite Lake. The Pheasant Inn re-opened on 28th August following a refurbishment. The unique public bar remains unchanged due to a listing application made by Pub Heritage Group. It is considered the best surviving example of an interwar hotel bar in England. Hugh Price attended the opening night but reports that the real ale was not up to scratch - hopefully teething problems only.

Edinburgh & The Lothians, BARONY BAR, Edinburgh. Further to our report in the June bulletin the Barony Bar has found a new tenant and re-opened in August. The leasehold for this Punch owned pub was originally advertised in November 2020.

County Durham, COLPITTS HOTEL, Durham. The Colpitts Hotel (Regional Inventory) joins a long list of Sam Smiths pubs looking for a manager. Other National Inventory pubs run by Sam Smiths and still looking for managers are: Berkeley Hotel, Scunthorpe; The Turnpike, Withington; and the Coach & Horses, Weastle, both Greater Manchester.

London, PAVILION & FLANAGAN’s, Battersea. Jane Jephcote reports that the Pavilion (was Regional Inventory) and nearby Flanagan’s (Some Regional Interest) have both been demolished. Planning permission for the demolition, part of a redevelopment, had been granted originally in 2017.

CAMRA Pub Design Awards 2021. The winners of this year’s awards have been announced. The awards recognise the best architecture, design and conservation projects across the UK. The judging panel is chaired by Andrew Davison.
The Swan and Railway, Wigan, currently rated as being of Some Regional Interest, won the Historic England award for conservation, following a restoration programme by owner John Brierley that has revitalised the pub which he purchased in 2018.
The National Inventory Green Dragon, Flaunden was the joint winner of the Refurbishment Award. This included the careful restoration of the historic Tap Room, as well as good quality contemporary re-design of previously altered parts of the pub.
The Regional Inventory Bridge Inn, Horwich, won the Community Local Award for the refurbishment by owners Bridge Inn Horwich Ltd. The pub had been run down and was in poor condition under its former pubco ownership.
