The Claude Hotel is well worth a visit to see the comfortable panelled Oak Room on the left hand side. The pub was built in 1890 and was refitted in the 1930s. The Oak Room is typical of the better rooms in large town pubs of the inter-war years and even though the pub had a refurbishment in 2005 the locals insisted that no changes were made to it! The Oak Room was a men-only lounge up to the early 1970s - the Sex Discrimination Act came into force on 1 January 1976. The public bar is a large modern room created in 1994 by the amalgamation of the public bar, a ladies snug and a skittle alley at the rear.
