Pub-Heritage-Bulletin-227-Dec-2021

Gloucestershire & Bristol, BERKELEY ARMS, Purton. Since the retirement of the long-term licensee in 2020, the Berkeley Castle Estate have been seeking a new tenant. Concerned that it may be re-developed in an unsympathetic way, the Pub Heritage Group made a listing application to Historic England. It has become apparent that prior to the Historic England assessment, the bar counter and bar back of this rare unspoilt rural pub were removed. The interior will now need to be re-assessed once the pub re-opens.

Lancashire, YE HORNS INN, Goosnargh. Mick Slaughter reports that a new bar has been installed in the parlour bar. It appears that these works have not been approved. The heritage statement submitted as part of the listed building application included for the preservation of this screened bar and parlour room. Paul Ainsworth has submitted a request for a planning enforcement notice to the council. The pub is due to re-open soon, and Mick reports that the works are near completion.

West Midlands, ROSE VILLA TAVERN, Birmingham. The Rose Villa Tavern closed on 31st December. Bitters N’Twisted, who have leased this pub for 10 years, are handing it back to its owners, Star Inns and Bars, who are now seeking new tenants: Star Pubs . A refurbishment is planned but this is confined to the upper floors and exterior. Thanks to Ash Corbett-Collins and Mick Slaughter for this update.

Derbyshire, EYRE ARMS, Hassop. The Eyre Arms has not reopened since lockdown - we have not yet been able to establish the reason for this or any plans to reopen this pub at present.

Tyne & Wear, CROWN POSADA, Newcastle upon Tyne. We reported last December that the Crown Posada (Regional Inventory) had been bought from pub group Sir John Fitzgerald by the Ladhar Group. Following what has been reported as a sensitive refurbishment, the pub has now re-opened: Chronicle Live .

Greater London Central, GEORGE, Fitzrovia. The George on Great Portland Street (Regional Inventory) has re-opened following a refurbishment. Will Johnson has visited and describes the interior as being ‘mightily impressive’, the work having been carried out to a high standard with all historic fittings remaining intact.

Staffordshire, DERBY INN, Burton upon Trent. We reported in April on the planning application that had been submitted for change of use for this popular Regional Inventory pub. The planning application went to committee and despite objections from CAMRA has been approved: Staffordshire Live .
